American Bulldog Information

American Bulldog History

The American Bulldog was first used in the sport of bull bating. A few of these dogs were brought over to American from England, this is where the breed was then bred down and their personalities were then softened. The American version of the Bulldog was larger and though calmer was still fierce. The American Bulldog had longer legs and quicker speed than its English counterpart.

This Bulldog was created by a man by the name of John D. Johnson. He was able to bring back the almost extinct English Mastiff which he used to then mix and create what we know today as the American Bulldog. He has been breeding these dogs longer than anyone else in the world. He is the reason why this breed still exists today. The American Bulldog is seen as a loving and loyal house pet to date and still carries the strength and stamina that the first variations of the Bulldog had carried.

American Bulldogs' Appearance

The American Bulldog has a few physical characteristics that differ from the English bulldog. For one, the American Bulldog is much longer in size and not as stocky. The American Bulldogs legs are very long lean and muscular as well. They are much quicker than the English Bulldog. The American Bulldog carries a very strong head with a large jaw and an undershot scissors bite. The eyes are sharply defined and alert with playfulness. The ears are often shown in a rose shape, though some people choose to crop the ears. The mouth is large and the lips are black. The front legs are heavy boned and strong and the back legs should remain very muscular in form. The coat is a short solid coat which comes in a few colors. The coat can be white, all shades of brindle, brown, red, or tan.

They are very fun loving and enjoy being part of the family.
